Who are the Farmers? Our farmers are primarily from Georgia and Alabama. They are small to mid-sized operations. Each has shown a commitment to sustainable growing practices which enrich the soils and eliminate artificial chemicals in our food. What types of food will I receive? Our food is locally grown or produced which mean no bananas. Available items will vary by season. Working with multiple farms allows us to maximize the variety of food available. We invite you to visit http://thoughtfulconsumption.wordpress.com/ - a weekly CSA blog from one of our CSA members. Our CSA standard family package includes 5-7 varieties of seasonally available fruits, vegetables and herbs. This might include a pound each of squash, carrots and tomatoes, a head of lettuce, a bundle of fresh herbs or a head of garlic plus a pint of strawberries. Options are also available for smaller or larger packages to fit your needs. You can choose to upgrade to a Gourmet Pack which includes a variety of specialty items and susbstitutions with higher end produce such as french filet beans, fingerling potatoes and limit items like heirloom tomatoes. Beef, chicken and pork will be offered when available. Due to refrigeration concerns we will be announcing "meat-ups" through the on-line store where you can bring your cooler and fill up on some great pasture raised meat. We will have many of our weekly CSA items available through our on-line store. Specialty items such as bread, honey, grains, goats milk soap and herbal teas will also be available through the on-line store. What is the difference between sustainably grown and organic? We have a mix. Our emphasis is to encourage the use of sustainable growing practices which encompasses more than requiring a piece of paper from our farmers. Although most of our food is grown using organic practices we do not require that our grower be certified organic. The certification process can involve alot of cost and paperwork and would eliminate a number of our small farmers from participating in this program. The goal is to build the soil which sustains the farm and minimize the amount of input from outside the farm.
We provide you with choices and we like to be up front as to what we are providing. In some cases, access to organically grown items is very limited and would preclude some items from our list. Most of our apples and peaches are grown using low spray IPM (integrated pest management) practices which allows for very limited use of chemicals during critical periods. The amounts used are far less than what is allowed by baby food manufacturers. In many cases, the overall carbon footprint for an IPM orchard is far smaller than an organically certified orchard.
Due to the limited market of organic grains we do not require that the animal feed be organically certified. Our requirement for eggs and meat are that the animals have daily access to pasture that has not been sprayed with chemicals in the last 3 years and that they are not fed hormones or stimulants. Anti-biotics can only be used for medical emergencies and must be out of the animals system (30 days) before they can be put back into production. .
How much food will I receive ? This will depend on which package you sign-up for. A typical standard Family pack may contain 1# each of squash, green beans, onion and peaches, a head of lettuce, 1/2 # bag of peppers and a small bundle of mixed herbs. The Dinner for 2 pack has 1/2 to 3/4 sized portions for those who require less. The Extra Servings option would be for those who require more each week or are planning to share a package. . How do I sign-up? You must first register to gain access to our on-line store and CSA programs. You can call or email your orders if this works better for you. . Can I still subscribe to a CSA program if I do not choose to be a Member? No, however you can still purchase items from our on-line store. The commitment from our members provides our program a solid base with which to work and greatly helps our farmers. . I can’t decide, can I order from the On-Line store without being a member? Yes!! The on-line store is a great way to try us out. If you order on a weekly basis, you can choose to join us anytime during the year to gain access to our CSA subscription program and member discounts. .
How do I pick-up my order? The CSA and On-Line store orders are delivered at the same time. Any order made after Monday noon will be delivered the following week. Your order will be followed by an email which will include any additional pick-up instructions. Each package will be labeled with your name and you can have someone pick-up for you if you need. Can I stop a delivery if I leave town? Yes. We will need 4 days notice to stop a delivery of a CSA package so that we can coordinate our orders for the week. You will get full credit for any deliveries you miss and we will pick back up when you get back. What if I forget and miss my delivery time? Our delivery times are based on what is convenient for our delivery site managers who have donated the space for the packages. It is our policy that any packages left after the posted hours can used at the discretion of the site manager. In many cases they are distributed to the workers at the site or donated to charity. If you miss your pick-up, you may call us at 770-633-6261 and we can check to see whether your package is available.
